My good friend Fiona is coming to America this summer. Last summer she came to visit us - we went hiking, visited the mile high swinging bridge, went white water rafting in Tenessee and watched a lame fireworks display. This year we'd like to meet up somewhere. The only requirement is that it be in the contiguous USA. I travel constantly, but for some reason I'm having a hard time coming up with something to visit in my homeland. So, I am asking you for help...
what is a good place to take a family vacation in the USA? What place would you like to see and why? Is there a place you visited where you had an absolutely fabulous time and would recommend we visit too? What are the best vacation spots in the US?
Suggestions solicited. Thanks in advance for your help.
When is your friend and family coming to visit? I'd recommend my hometown: Atlanta, but not in July-August... unless ya'll can take the heat.
ReplyDeleteTo do: Ride into the city on MARTA to visit the aquarium, see a Braves game, visit the Coke museum, and play at Piedmont Park. Drive to the east side of town for a trip to the zoo and a picnic in Grant Park. Atlanta has great eats - so consider splurging one night out... or maybe experimenting with one of the many international dives on Buford Hwy.
My sister Natalie recommends the Black Hills and Badlands of South Dakota. This would be camping style and entail driving from site to site, which she swears is doeable with kids... and has a story about hitch-hiking and small children in car seats to back up her claim.
ReplyDeleteOkay, and last but not least... Some of my favorite vacation memories come from Kiawah Island. It's now a swanky golf resort, but my memories are of biking around the island, watching sea turtles hatch and shuffle out to the ocean, watching out for alligators in the lagoons, flying kites and combing the beach for shells.
ReplyDeleteAnother great trip we took was to the Okefenokee Swamp in southern Georgia. A fascinating place, probably more complete if you read the book "Lord Baltimore" before going.
I'm biased, as I live there, but there are LOTS of nature-environmentally friendly things to do in Texas. There is Salt water beach, though the further south you go the better they are, South Padre in Brownsville is the best for that, or central texas, near austin, awesome hiking/biking, river/water, city/urban activities there, or out west in Big Bend, mostly uninhabited space but very close to nature. There are even Pine Forests in East texas, you get to pick your adventure!
