legislating teeth whitening

In December, I saw something shocking...teeth whitening kiosks in the middle of the Overland Park mall.

Recently, I was listening to All Things Considered (one of my favorite radio programs) on NPR on my drive home from work . They had a segment on teeth whitening kiosks. Turns out these things are franchises you can purchase for $2,500. The ADA (American Dentistry Association) is up in arms about them because they consider the kiosks unsafe for those who have gum disease and the personnel running the kiosk are not trained in dentistry, thus unable to recognize signs of gum disease dangers. The report said: "In January, the Tennessee Board of Dentistry declared that the kiosk-whiteners are practicing dentistry without a license." This is not the only state to ban these kiosks.

What are your thoughts? Should teeth whitening kiosks be banned? Should the government regulate cosmetic dentistry? Is it an American right to have a pearly white smile? Are there more important matters to concern us?

Things that make you go hmmm...
