Gone Fishin'

Recently, Phim and I headed to a gun store that sold live bait. We bought our fishing license, some worms, listened to advice from the men at the shop who weren't used to seeing our type in their location...

We rented a small, motorized boat and headed out to catch some fish.

I really wanted to be on one of the kayak's...but that will have to happen another day.

The scenery was so beautiful and serene, until we came across these painted rocks. The local high school row teams had left their mark. What is it about young people and destructive behavior? There are other, more productive, ways to leave your mark on the world - but that is just my personal opinion.

We did get to see one fun bit of nature - a turtle, enjoying the water just like us.

Though we caught no fish, we did have a good time on a leisurely Saturday. I had told Phim that her dad, Lope, would have come home with a catch. He later asked if we had a successful adventure.

She said it was likely too late in the day and we'd need to go earlier next time.

His response, "you just need to know where the holes are."

Apparently, we lack that knowledge...at least I do.

Can they tell?

I have one major allergy in life - CATS!

We are well aware of the usual temperament of cats. We have sayings like - "Dogs have owners. Cats have staff."

Many of my friends have cats...and for some reason unknown to me I am the person the cat will come to. The shy cats, the finicky cats, the prima-donna cats - all will crawl right in my lap. It's as if they can tell...

I hear the cat owner often say, "he/she NEVER does this with anyone else" or "he/she is usually not like this."

Hmmmm....

If you have been following this blog for a while, you know there is a dream in my heart that goes unfulfilled. For all the experiences I have been afforded in life - there is one I long for, but cannot control. I want to be a mom. I wrote about this desire last year.

Another chlidless year has come...and gone. I am another year older and feel further away from realizing this desire. I am not writing this for sympathy (or pity).

I am writing because I have noticed a strange phenomenon. At grocery stores, restaurants, parks, malls and other public places. Young children often just come to me or start talking to me. Their moms usually apologize and say, "he/she doesn't usually do this" as they pull the child away.

It happens so often I am beginning to wonder - can they tell?

Guest blogger: The Traveling Spouse

Today, I am a guest blogger at Little Creek Life. My friend Athalia writes about life in the mountains on a five acre swamp.

I was asked to be part of a series on "Holding down the Fort." This series is dedicated to those leading a life of adventure...and attempting to overcome the struggles that come with it. My perspective was unique, as I was the traveling spouse, rather than the one being left behind.

A sad day in my world...

Borders' seeks approval to liquidate, close stores

Borders has been my favorite bookstore for over a decade. Apparently I am not main stream. First Circuit City (my favorite electronics store), then JC Penney Outlet, now Borders.

I often spend time on a weekend just wandering the aisles - now what will I do on a leisurely Saturday?

Where am I?

ANSWER:  My favorite grocery - Global Foods.

This place is fabulous! Items from all over the world. Unique finds. A variety of people and languages filling the aisles. Sights (and smells) that I've only experienced on other continents. Entering the doors leaves me feeling as though I have suddenly left America and been transported to another space and time. Ahhh...
