Halloween
Today is also my dad's birthday. He turns 65. I have the privilege of being with him on his birthday. He is arriving for the extended weekend and has the honor of being our first visitor. We are packing a lot in to a few days. The journey starts in Siem Reap, home to Angkor Wat temples. Then we will take a taxi to our home town of Phnom Penh to see some of the water festival activities. Sunday, he and I will then head to Bangkok - his favorite place in the world to shop.
November 3 I will join my colleagues in Thailand for budget meetings, etc and will return to Cambodia a couple of weeks later.
It will be a busy few weeks! I am so glad my dad is coming. Prior to marriage he was my travel buddy and we haven't traveled together much in recent years. He also comes bearing gifts from home, things I forgot or didn't think to pack that my family has generously collected to send with their delegate to our part of the world. It will be like Christmas in October! I think my holidays are confused - what am I celebrating? Halloween? New Year's? Christmas? Don't matter. I am celebrating!

favorite pic of the week
Saturday our staff and their families were invited to spend some time at a local resort, just playing at the pool and hanging out together. We had seafood BBQ and good laughs. Staff from the four base offices were invited, not all attended. Here is a picture with those who were present...thought you might like to see those I work with.

I miss fall
I live in the land of perpetual sun. Now some (my mom for instance) might think that is heaven. I'm sure when there are pictures of snow I might agree and there are plenty of days when it is wonderful to have the sun on your skin and not be miserably cold. However, there are also plenty of days when it is just exhausting to be hot and sweaty all day.
Fall is one of my favorite seasons. I find it calming to have the wind blow through the trees or incredibly relaxing to take a walk and crunch leaves under my feet. I can't do that here, I live in the tropics. Our seasons are hot and rainy or hot and dry. That's it. Two seasons - one with lots of water and one without.
This is my first year living overseas and right now I am missing fall.

learning Khmae: numbers are confusing
Kenyon and I continue to struggle through learning Khmae (pronounced: K-my). Featured in this photo is our language teacher Panha. We have lanugage class three times a week. We are taking a conversational language course and have made it through basic greetings, giving and receiving directions, and shopping at the market. We have moved on to getting to know one another.
I am slowly remembering more and more words and the more I learn the easier it is to live here. I can now comfortably hop on the back of any moto and feel confident enough that I can tell the driver where to go (assuming I know the direction, there are still times I have to ask him to "please stop" so I can pull out my city map and make sure we are going the right way). Recently in the grocery store I was able to ask one of the clerks who did not speak good English if the fruit I wanted was ripe. She helped me pick a good one and I was proud of myself for achieving that level of conversation.
There is one area in my language learning that I am really stuck and struggling. Numbers. Numbers are going to be my demise. They are confusing on so many levels. I recently wrote an email on this topic to friends and family on my distribution list. One of my friends said on the phone the other day that she and her husband were laughing out loud when they read that part. They have lived overseas before and totally related to my experience. For those who read this blog, but don't get the emails, here is what I wrote:
